राजा उठून बसल्याची बातमी लागताच प्रधानाने मच्छिंद्रनाथाचा हात धरून त्यास देवळात नेले व राजास झालेला समग्र वृत्तांत निवेदन केला. मग राजा त्याच्या पाया पडला व नाव विचारू लागला असता, मला मच्छिंद्र म्हणतात म्हणून त्याने त्यास सांगितले. मच्छिंद्रनाथाची कीर्ति पूर्वीच राजास ऐकून ठाऊक झालेली होती. तोच मच्छिंद्रनाथ आज येऊन दर्शन देत आहे, म्हणून राजास फार आनंद झाला. नंतर राजाने त्याचा हात धरून आपल्या समागमे राजवाड्यात नेले. तेथे सिंहासनावर बसवून त्याची षोडशोपचारांनी पूजा केली व स्वतः त्याच्या सेवेकरिता हात जोडून उभा राहिला. अशी राजाची निष्ठा पाहून मच्छिंद्रनाथास परमानंद झाला. मग प्रसन्न होऊन कोणता हेतु तुझ्या मनात आहे तो मला कळव म्हणून त्याने म्हटले. तेव्हा राजा म्हणाला, मी सूर्यवंशी श्रीराम राजाच्या घराण्यातला आहे. माझे नाव पाशुपत. मला इतकेच मागावयाचे की, सूर्यकुळांत उत्पन्न झालेला जो वीरशिरोमणी श्रीराम त्याची मला भेट व्हावी. ते ऐकून रामाची व तुझी भेट आताच करून देतो, असे बोलून राजास घेऊन मच्छिंद्रनाथ सभेच्या बाहेर आंगणात येऊन उभा राहिला.

त्यावेळी त्याने धूम्रास्त्रमंत्र म्हणून व भस्म मंत्रून सूर्यावर टाकिले, तेणेकरून संपूर्ण आकाश धुराने भरून गेले; सूर्य झाकून गेला व त्याचा सारथी अरुण धुरामुळे डोळे पुसू लागला आणि तोंडात धूर गेल्याने कासावीस होऊ लागला. तेव्हा क्षत्रिय कुळातील कोणी तरी राजाने ही धुम्रास्त्रविद्या प्रेरिली आहे, असे सूर्यास वाटले. मग त्याने वायु अस्त्राची योजना बाणावर करून तो बाण सोडला. तेव्हा मोठा वारा सुटला, त्या योगाने धूर दाही दिशांस फाकला. मग मच्छिंद्रनाथाने पर्वतास्त्राची योजना केली. त्याने सूर्याच्या रथास अडथळा झाला त्या क्षणीच सूर्यनारायणाने वज्रास्त्र सोडिले. तेणेकरून पर्वतास्त्रापासून निर्माण झालेल्या सर्व पर्वताच्या नाश झाला. मग मच्छिंद्रनाथाने भ्रमास्त्राची योजना केली. तेव्हा घोड्यासहित अरुण सुद्धा भ्रमिष्ट होऊन वाट सोडून रथ भलतीकडे नेऊ लागला. असे पाहून सूर्याने ज्ञानास्त्र सोडिले. तेव्हा अग्नीवर उदक टाकल्याने जसा तो नाहीसा होतो किंवा शिष्याचे अज्ञानपण बोध करून सद्गुरू नाहीसे करतो. त्याचप्रमाणे सूर्याने ज्ञानास्त्राची प्रेरणा करून भ्रमाचे निरसन केलं, ते पाहून मच्छिंद्रनाथाने वाताकर्शण अस्त्र सोडिले. तेव्हा सूर्यासह सारथी, घोडे ह्यांचा श्वासोच्छ्वास बंद झाला व रथ उलटून जमिनीवर आदळला. त्याबरोबर सूर्यहि रथाखाली पडला. त्या तेजोमय सूर्याच्या योगाने पृथ्वी जळून जाऊ लागली. तेव्हा मच्छिंद्रनाथाने उदकास्त्राची योजना केली. मग अपरिमित जलवृष्टि होऊन दाह शांत झाला. परंतु सूर्य खाली पडून बेशुद्ध झाल्याने देवांची तोंडे सुकून गेली. ते सर्व मच्छिंद्रनाथाजवळ आले. ब्रह्मदेव, विष्णु, शिव, वरुण, अश्विनी, कुबेर गंधर्व वगैरे सर्व देव लगबगीने धावत आले. एका सूर्यासाठी हे सर्व देव महीवरती उतरून मच्छिंद्रनाथाजवळ गेले व सूर्यापासून कोणता अपराध झाला आहे, म्हणून त्यानी विचारले. तेव्हा मच्छिंद्रनाथाने नमस्कार केला आणि उत्तर दिले की, हा पाशुपत राजा सूर्यकुळातला असताहि सूर्य आपल्या वंशाचा बिलकुल समाचार घेत नाही. व ह्याच्याकडे नुसता ढुंकूनसुद्धा पाहात नाही. पाशुपत राजा सूर्यास आवडत नाही, म्हणून त्यास वळणावर आणावयासाठी मला असे करावे लागले. असे करण्यामध्ये आणखी दुसरे हेतु आहेत. माझ्या साबरि मंत्रविद्येला सुर्याचे बिनहरकत साह्य मिळावे व ज्याने सूर्यवंशामध्ये अवतरून विजयध्वज लाविला, त्या श्रीरामचंद्राची या पाशुपत राजास भेट व्हावी; का की, या राजाचा मजवर पूर्ण लोभ आहे. यास्तव हे चक्रपाणी, माझे इतके हेतु पुरवावे. हे ऐकून विष्णुने सांगितले की, तुझ्या मनाप्रमाणे सर्व गोष्टी घडून येतील, परंतु अगोदर सूर्याला सावध कर. तो तुझ्या मंत्राला सर्व गोष्टींनी अनुकूल असून जेथे त्याचे नाव निघेल तेथे तो स्वतः येऊन तुझे कार्य पार पाडून देईल. सहज सूर्याचे नाव घेतले असता पातक भस्म होते. मग ते मंत्रप्रयोगाच्या जोडीने घेतले तर फारच उत्तम फल प्राप्त होईल. आम्ही सर्व देव तुझ्या कार्यासाठी उतरलो आहो, आता विलंब न करिता यास लवकर उठीव. वीरभद्राच्या युद्धप्रसंगाच्या वेळेस आम्ही तुझ्या म्हणण्याप्रमाणे वागण्याचे कबूल केले, नागपत्रअश्वत्थाचे ठिकाणी तुला वरदाने दिली. असे असता अजून संशयात का पडतोस? असे बोलून सर्व देवांनी दुःखापासून सोडविण्याबद्दल मनस्वी भीड घातली. परंतु मच्छिंद्रनाथाने सांगितले की, पाशुपत राजास रामाचे दर्शन करवा; म्हणजे माझ्या मनाला स्वस्थता वाटेल. हे ऐकताच रामचंद्र प्रगट झाले. तेव्हा राजास व नाथास अपार आनंद झाला. नंतर मच्छिंद्रनाथ पाशुपत राजासह रामाच्या पाया पडला. त्यास रामाने पोटाशी धरिले.

त्याच वेळी मच्छिंद्राने रामाची प्रार्थना केली की, तुझे नाम श्रेष्ठ होय. साबरी विद्येच्या मंत्रयोगामध्ये तुझे नाव येईल, तेव्हा तू येथे हजर राहून ते कार्य सिद्धीस न्यावेस व ह्याबद्दल प्रसन्न मनाने वचनादाखल माझ्या हातावर हात द्यावा. हे ऐकून रामाने की, तिन्ही देवांचा अवतार दत्तात्रय, त्याचा पूर्णपणे वरदहस्त तुझ्या मस्तकावर, तो पूर्णब्रह्म नरसिंहअवतार, त्याचीहि तुला पूर्ण अनुकूलता. मग मी का तुला साह्य न व्हावे? तर तुला मी सर्वस्वी साह्य आहे. मंत्रात माझे नाव निघताच मी ते कार्य करीन, असे त्यास रामाने वचन दिले. त्या वेळी त्याने असेहि सांगितले की, तु कविनारायणाचा अवतार असल्यामुळे आपण उभयता एकच आहो, असे सांगून सूर्यास उठविण्यासाठी रामाने मच्छिंद्रनाथाचे पुष्कळ आर्जव केले.

मच्छिंद्रनाथाचा त्या वेळचा आनंद अपरिमित होता. मग मच्छिंद्रनाथाने वायूक्त अस्त्रमंत्र म्हणून भस्म टाकिताच सुर्य सावध झाला व त्याने सर्व देवाना जवळ बोलाविले. सर्व देवांनी त्यास नमस्कार केला. पुढे हा कोणत्या वीराचा प्रताप म्हणून सूर्याने विष्णूस विचारिले व मला हात दाखविणार्‍या प्रतापीवीरास एकदा आणून मला भेटवा म्हणून सांगितले. सूर्यास भेटण्यासाठी देवानी मच्छिंद्रनाथास बोलाविले, मग सूर्यापासून दाह न व्हावा म्हणून चंद्रास्त्र मंत्रून नाथ त्यास भेटावयास गेला. नमस्कार केल्यानंतर सूर्याने त्यास नाव गाव विचारिले असता विष्णूनेच मुळापासून त्यास कथा सांगितली. तेव्हा सूर्याने मच्छिंद्रनाथास साबरी विद्येस साह्य असल्याबद्दल वचन दिले. मग पाशुपत राजास त्याच्या पायावर घातले. आपला वंशज पाहून सूर्यास आनंद झाला. मग त्याचे समाधान करून सूर्यासह सर्व देव आपापल्या ठिकाणी गेले. मच्छिंद्रनाथहि राजाचा निरोप घेऊन व रामाचे दर्शन घेऊन पुढे तीर्थयात्रा करीत चालला.
