याप्रमाणें गणांची झालेली अवस्था पाहुन तेथचे सर्व लोक भयभीत झाले. ते शिवापुढें जाउन हात जोडून उभे राहिले व म्हणाले कीं, गावच्या दाराशीं एक मनुष्य आला असून त्याने तेराशें द्वाररक्षकगणांस जमिनीस खिळून ओणवें करुन टाकिलें असून तें त्या दूःखानें ओरडत आहेत. हें ऐकून शिवानें त्या शिक्षा करावयास आठहि काळभैरवांस आज्ञा केली. त्याप्रमाणें ते काळभैरव शतकोटि गण घेऊन बाहेर पडले. हें पाहून नाथानें स्पर्शास्त्रानें त्या गणांनाहि ओणवे केलें, पण भैरवांनीं त्या अस्त्रास जुमानिलें नाहीं. त्यानीं धनुष्यें हाती घेऊन बाणांवर वातास्त्र अग्नस्त्र, नागास्त्र यांची योजना करुण बाण सोडिले. तेव्हां नाथानें पर्वतास्त्र, पर्जनास्त्र याप्रमाणें योजना केली. ह्या अस्त्रांनीं भैरवांच्या अस्त्रांचा मोड झाला. नंतर तीं अस्त्रें भैरवांवर पडली, तेणेंकरुन ते जर्जर झाले.

याप्रमाणें शंकाराची व गणांची प्राणांत अवस्था केल्याचें वृत्त विष्णुस कळतांच तो लागलाच तेथें धावून आला. त्यानें नाथास आलिंगन देऊन पोटाशीं धरिलें आणि विचारिलें कीं, कोणत्या कारणामुळें रागावून तुं हा एवढा अनर्थ केलास ? तेव्हां रेवणनाथानें विष्णुस सांगितलें कीं, मी सरस्वती ब्राह्मणकडे असतां शंकरानें त्याचा पुत्र मारिला. या कारणास्तव मी शिवाचा प्राण घेऊन संजीवनी अस्त्राच्या योगानें मुलास जिवंत करुन घेऊन जाईन. तुम्ही ब्राह्मणाचीं सातहि बाळें आणुन द्या म्हणजे शंकराच्या प्राणांचे रक्षण करितो; तें ऐकून विष्णुनें सांगितलें कीं, ती सर्व बाळें माझ्याजवळ आहेत, मी ते सातहि प्राण तुझ्या हवाली करितो, पण देह मात्र तूं निर्माण कर. हे विष्णुचें बोलणें रेवणनाथानें कबूल केलें. मग वातप्रेरक अस्त्र जपून नाथानें शंकरास सावध केलें व मग विभक्त अस्ताचा जप करून सर्व गण मुक्त केले व स्थितिमंत्र म्हणुन अष्टभैरवांना भस्म लावून त्यांस अस्त्रापासुन मोकळें केलें. मग सर्वांनीं नाथास नमन केलें. तेव्हां विष्णुनें सातहि प्राण नाथाच्या स्वाधीन केले व त्यास जावयांस परवानगी दिली.

पूर्वी सरस्वतीच्या उद्देशानें ब्रह्मदेवाचें वीर्यपतन झीलें असतां तें एका सर्पिणीच्या मस्तकांवर येऊन पडलें. तें तिनें भक्षण करुण आपल्या पोटांत सांठवून ठेविलें. मग दिवसेंदिवस गर्भ वाढत चालला. ही गोष्ट आस्तिकऋषीच्या लक्षांत आली. नऊ नारायणांपैकीं एकजन पोटीं येईल व त्यास लोक नानगाथ म्हणतील हेंहि तो समजला. मग आस्तिकमुनीनें त्या सर्पणीला जवळ बोलावून सांगितलें कीं, तूं या गोष्टीबद्दल कांहीं चिंता करुं नको तुझ्या पोटीं ऐरहोत्रनारायण जन्मास येणार आहे, परंतु तुला सांगावयाचें कारण असें कीं, पुढें तुजवर मोठा कठिण प्रसंग गुजरणार आहे. सध्यां जनमेजयराजानें सर्पमात्र आरंभिलें असून मोठ मोठ्या ऋषीच्या साह्यानें समिधांच्या ऐवजीं सर्पांची योजना करून त्याची यज्ञकुंडांत आहुति देत आहे; म्हणुन ही गोष्ट मी तुला सांगुन ठेविली. यास्तव आतां तुं कोठें तरी लपून राहा. याप्रमाणें आस्तिक मुनीनें जेव्हा तिला भय घातलें, तेव्हा तिनें आपणास राहावयास निर्भय स्थळ कोणतें म्हणून त्यास विचारिलें, तेव्हा जवळच एक वडाचें झाड होतें. त्याच्या पोखरामध्यें लपून राहाव यास आस्तिक ऋषीनें तिला सांगितलें. मग ती सर्पीण त्या वडाच्या पोखरांत लपून राहिली व आस्तिकानें अचळ वज्रप्रयोगानें तें झाड सिंचन करुन ठेविलें व आपण हस्तिनापुरास गेला.

नंतर आस्तिकमुनीनें जनमेजयराजाच्या यज्ञमंडपांत जाऊन सर्व ऋषींची भेट घेऊन त्यांना हा गुप्त वृत्तांत कळविला आणी म्हटलें, ब्रह्मवीर्य सर्पणीच्या उदरांत असून पुढें तो पुरुष वटसिद्ध नागनाथ या नावानें प्रकट होईल. नऊ नारायणापैकीं ऐरहोत्र नारायणच हा अवतार घेणार आहे, त्यास मारुं नये. तें सर्व ऋषींनीं कबूल केल्यानंतर पुढें सर्पसत्र समाप्त झालें; इकडे सर्पिणाचे नवमास पूर्ण झाले. मग ती पद्मिण नावांची सर्पीण प्रसुत होऊन तिनें एक अंडें घातलें. तें वडाच्या पोकळींत बहुत दिवसपावेतों राहिलें होतें त्यांत ऐरहोत्र नारायणानें संचार केला. पुढें त्याचा देह मोठा झाल्यवर अंड फूटून मूल दिसूं लागलें.पुढें तें मुल रडू लागलें पण त्याचें रक्षण करण्यात तेथें कोणी नव्हतें.

त्या वेळीं कोशधर्म या नांवाचा एक अथर्वणवेदी गौडब्राह्मण वेदशास्त्रांत निपूण होता, परंतु तो फार गरीब असल्यानें त्याच्या संसाराचे हाल होत. दारिद्र्यामुळें तो उदास होऊन गेला होता. गरिबी पाठीस लागल्यामुळें पत्रावळींकरितां तो वडाची पानें आणावयास जात असे. एके दिवशीं तो त्या झाडाजवळ गेला असतां तेथें मुलाच्या रडण्याचा आवाज त्याच्या कानीं पडला. तो ऐकून कोण रडतें हा शोध करण्यासाठीं तो आसपास पाहूं लागला. परंतु त्यास कोणिही न दिसल्यामुळें तो संशयांत पडला. तरी पण हा मुलाचाच शब्द अशी त्याची खात्री झाली. मग त्यास देवांनीं सांगितलें कीं, कोशधर्म या वड्याच्या झाडाच्या पोकळींत बालक रडत आहे, त्यांस स्पर्श झाला कीं त्याचा काळिमा जाऊन सुवर्ण होते; तद्वतु हा मुलगा तुझ्या घरीं आला कीं, तुझें दारिद्र नाश पावेल. हा देवांनीं एक बाण सोडला. त्यासरसें तें झाड मोडून पडलें. झाड पडतांच आंतील वर्षाव केला. मग देवांनीं हात जोडून त्या नारायणास नमस्कार केला. आणी कोशधर्म ब्राह्मणास सांगितलें कीं, महाराज ! या भुमंडळावर आपण मोठे भाग्यवान आहां म्हणुन ह वटसिद्ध नागनाथ तुम्हांस प्राप्त झाला आहे. हा पद्मिणी नांवाच्या नागिणीच्या पोटीं जन्मला असून वटवृक्षामध्यें ह्याचें संरक्षण झालें आहे. त्यास्तव आतां ह्याचें ' वटसिद्ध नागनाथ ' हेंच नांव प्रसिद्ध करावें. हा सिद्ध असुन योगी लोकांचा नाथ होईल.

ती देववाणी ऐकतांच कोशधर्मानें त्या मुलास उचलून घरीं नेलें. त्या समयीं त्यास परमानंद झाला. तें ऐकून त्याची स्त्री सुरादेवी हीदेखील समग्र झाली. ती म्हणाली, मला वाटतें कीं, हा चंद्र किंवा सूर्य अवतरला असावा. तिनें मुलास उचलून स्तनाशीं लाविलें तो पान्हा फुटला. मग तिनें आनंदानें मुलास स्नान घालून पाळण्यांत घातलें व त्याचें ' वटसिध्द नागनाथ ' असें नांव ठिविलें. सुरादेवींचें त्या मुलावर अत्यंत प्रेम जडलें. तो मुलगा मोठा झाल्यावर कोशधर्मानें सातव्या वर्षा त्याचें यथाविधि मौंजीबंधन केले.

एके दिवशीं दोन प्रहरीं वटसिध्द नागनाथ भागिरथीच्या तीरीं काशीविश्वेश्वराच्या समोर कांहीं मुलें जमवून खेळूं लागला त्या संधीस दत्तात्रेयाची स्वारी तेथें गेली व मुलांचा खेळ पाहूं लागली. तेथें मुलांच्या पंक्ति बसवुन त्यांस वटसिद्ध नागनाथ लटकेंच अन्न वाढीत होता, मुलें पुरें म्हणत होती. हा त्यांस घ्या, घ्या म्हणून आग्रह करुन वाढीत होता. असा मुलांचा चाललेला लटका खेळ दत्तात्रेयानें पाहिला. तेव्हां त्यास आश्चर्य वाटलें. लटक्यांच अन्नानें पोट भरलें म्हणून मुलें म्हणत, हें ऐकून त्यास हसुं आलें. नंतर बालरूप धरुण दत्तात्रेयानें त्या मुलांत संचार केला व अंगणांत उभा राहून तो म्हणाला, मी अथीत आलों आहें, मला भूक फार लागली आहे. कांहीं खावयास अन्न वाढा. हें ऐकून तीं मुलें त्याच्या पाठीस लागली व म्हणाली, तु रे कोण आमच्या मडळींत खेळावयास आला आहेस ? जातोस कां मारूं तुला ? असें म्हणुन कांहीं मुले काठीं उगारूं लागली व कांहीं मुलें दगड मारावयास धावलीं. हें नागनाथानें पाहिलें तेव्हां तो सर्व मुलांस म्हणाला आपल्या मेळ्यांत जो नवीन मुलगा आला आहे त्यास घालवून देऊं नका, आपल्याप्रमाणे त्यासहि वाढूं आयत्या वेळीं आलेल्या ब्राह्मणास अथीत समजुन परत दवडू नये, असे बोलुन त्याने त्या मुलास बसविलें. मग कल्पननें स्नान, षोडशोप चारांनीं पूजा, भोजन वगैरे झाले. जेवतांना सावकाश जेवा, घाई करुं नका. जें लागेल तें मागून घ्या, असा त्यस तो आग्रह करीत होताच. तेव्हा हा उदार आहे असें दत्तात्रेयास वाटले. हा पूर्वीचा कोणी तरी योगी असावा असेंहि त्याच्या मनांत ठसलें. दुसर्‍यास संतोशवून त्यावर उपकार करण्याची बुद्धी होणें पूर्वपुण्याईवांचुन घडावयाचें नाहीं, असा मनांत विचार करुन तो त्याचे पूर्वजन्मकर्म शोधूं लागला. तेव्हा त्याच्या जन्माचा सर्व प्रकार दत्तात्रेयाच्या लक्षांत आला. मग दत्तात्रयानें त्यास कृपा करुन सिद्धि दिली. तिचा गुण असा झाला कीं नागनाथ ज्या पदार्थाचें नांव तोंडांतुन घेई, तो पदार्थ तेथें उत्पन्न होऊं लागला. नंतर मुलांना जेवावयास वाढ म्हणून दत्तात्रेयानें नागनाथास सांगितलें. पण त्या सिद्धिचें अन्न खाण्याची नागनाथानें फक्त मनाई केली होती. जातेसमयीं दत्तात्रेयानें आपलें नांव सांगुन त्याचें नांव विचारुन घेतलें.

मग खेळतांना नागनाथ ज्या पदार्थाचे नांव घेई तो पदार्थ उप्तन्न होऊं लागला. त्यामुळें मुलें नित्य तृप्त होऊन घरीं बरोबर जेवीनातशीं झालीं न जेवण्याचें कारण आईबापांनीं मुलांना घरीं विचारलें असतां आम्हीं षड्रस अन्न जेवून येतो; म्हणुन मुलांनी सागांवे. प्रथम ही गोष्ट आईबापांना खरीं वाटली नाहीं; पण त्यांनी स्वतः भागीतथीतीरीं जाऊन नागनाथ षड्रस अन्नें वाढतो हें पाहतांच त्यांची खात्री झाली. मग ही बातमी सर्व क्षेत्रभर झाली व नागनाथाचा बाप कोशधर्म याच्या देखील ती कानांवर गेली. कित्येकांनी त्यास सांगितलें कीं, भागीरथीच्यां कांठी तुझा मुलगा मुलांच्या पंक्ति बसवुन उत्तम उत्तम पक्वाअन्नांच्या जेवणावळी घालीत असतो. हे आम्ही प्रत्यक्ष पाहून आलों आहों. तो अन्न कोठून आणितो व कसें तयार करितो त्याचें त्यासच ठाऊक. त्यानें जमिनीवर हात ठेविला कीं, इच्छिला पदार्थ उप्तन्न होतो. ही बातमी कोशधर्मानें जेव्हां ऐकिली, तेव्हां तो पूर्वी देवांनीं सांगितलेली खून समजला. पण त्यानें लोकांस ती हकिकत बोलून दाखविली नाहीं.

पुढें एके दिवशीं कोशधर्मानें आपल्या वतसिद्ध नागनाथ मुलास मांडीवर बसवून त्याच्या तोंडावरुन हात फिरवित व मुलाच्या जेवणांसंबधीं गोष्ट काढिली. तेव्हा तो म्हणाला, तुम्हांसहि मी असाच चमत्कार दाखवुन भोजनास घालितो. असें म्हणुन तो मांडीवरुन उतरला व जमिनीवर हात ठेवुन षड्रस अन्नाची इच्छा प्रकट करतांच उत्तम उत्तम पदार्थानीं भरलेलें पान तेथें उप्तन्न झालें तें पाहून कोशधर्मास फारच नवल वाटलें. मग हें साधन तुला कसें साध्य झालें. असें बापानें विचारल्यावर तो म्हणाला बाबा ! आम्हीं एकदां पुष्कळ मुलें नदीतीरीं खेळत होतो. इतक्यांत दत्तात्रेय नांवाचा मुलगा आला. त्याचा सर्व मुलांनी धिक्कार केला पण मी त्याची लटक्याचा पदर्थानें मनोभावें पूजा केली. तेव्हां त्यानें माझ्या मस्तकावर हात ठेवून कानांत कांहीं मंत्र सांगितला व अन्न वाढावयास लाविलें. त्या दिवसापासून माझ्या हातुन पाहिजे तो पदार्थ निर्माण होतो. हें ऐकुअन बापास परमानंद झाला. मग तो त्या दिवसापासुन मुलाकडून अथीताभ्यागतांची पुजा करवून त्यांस भोजन घालुन पाठवू लागला. त्यानें दत्तात्रयास आनंद झाला नागनाथाकडे हजारो मनुष्य जेवून द्रव्य, वस्त्र , धान्ये वगैरे घेऊन जाऊं लागली. या योगानें तो जगविख्यात झाला. जो तो त्याची कीर्ति वाखाणूं लागला.

एके दिवशीं नागनाथानें बापास विचारलें कीं , माझ्या हातानें या गोष्टी घडतात यांतला मुख्य उद्देश कोणता ? तसाच तो दत्तात्रेय मुलगा कोण होता, हें मला खुलासा करुन सांगावें तेव्हां बाप म्हणाला तो द्त्तात्रेय तिन्हीं देवांचा अवतार होय. तुझे दैव्य चांगले म्हणून तुला भेटुन तो सिद्धि देऊन गेला. तें ऐकून पुनः त्यावर बाप म्हणाला , तो एके ठीकाणी निसतो; यामुळें त्याची भेट होणें कठीण होय. त्याच्या भेटीची इच्छा धरुन प्रयत्‍न चालविल्यानें भेट होते असें नाहीं. तो आपण होऊन कृपा करुन दर्शन देईल तेव्हां खरें असें सांगुन बाप कांहीं कामाकरितां घराबाहेर गेला.

मग दत्तात्रेयाच्या दर्शनाकरिता जायाचा नागनाथानें निश्चय केला. तो कोणास न विचारतां घरुन निघाला व मातापुरी, पांचाळेश्वर वगैरे ठिकाणीं शोध करुं लागला. परंतु तेथें पत्ता न लागल्यामुळें कोल्हापुरास गेला व तेथील लोकांजवळ तो दत्ताविषयीं चौकशीं करुं लागला . तेव्हा लोक त्यास समजुन हंसले व दत्तात्रेय येथें येतो पण कोणास दिसत नाहीं कोणत्या तरी रुपानें येऊन भिक्षा मागूण जातो असें त्यांनी सांगितले. तें ऐकून दुसर्‍या क्षेत्रांत त्यास भिक्षा मिळत नाहीं कीं काय असें नागनाथानें विचारिलें या नाथाच्या प्रश्नावर लोकांनीं उत्तर दिलें कीं तो या कोल्हापुराशिवाय दुसर्‍या ठिकाणचें अन्न सेवन करीत नाहीं. येथें अन्न न मिळालें तर तो उपवास करील, पण अन्नासाठी दुसर्‍या गांवीं जाणार नाहीं. अन्य गांवच्या पक्वांन्नांस विटाळाप्रमाणें मानून या गांवांत अन्न परम पवित्र असं तो मानितो.

मग वटसिद्ध नागनाथानें विचार केला कीं, गांवांत कोठेंहि स्वयंपाक होऊं न देतां सर्वांस येथेंच भोजनास बोलवावें म्हणजे त्यास तिकडे कोठें अन्न मिळणार नाहीं व सहजच तो आपल्याकडे येईल. परंतु आपल्याकडचें सिद्ध अन्न तो घेणार नाही, ही खून लक्षांत ठेवुन ओळख पटतांच त्याचें पाय धरावे. माझें नांव त्यास व त्याचें नांव मला ठाऊक आहे, असा मनांत विचार करुन तो लक्ष्मीच्या देवालयांत गेला व पुजार्‍यापासुन एक खोली मागून घेऊन तेथें राहिला.

कांहीं दिवस गेल्यावर गांवजेवणावळ घालावी असें नाथाच्या मनांत आलें त्यानें ही गोष्ट पुजार्‍याच्यापाशीं काढून खटपटीस मदत करण्यासाठी विनंती केली. तेव्हां पुजारी म्हणाला, सार्‍या गावाच्या समाराधनेस पुरेल इतक्या अन्नाचा संग्रह तुझ्याजवला कोठें आहे? एरव्हीं वरकड सर्व खटपट आम्हीं करुं पण सामान कोठून आणणार ? त्यावर नाथानें सांगितलें कीं, सामग्री मी पुरवितो, तुम्ही खटपट मात्र करुं लागा. तें त्याचें म्हणणें पुजार्‍यानें कबूल केलें. शेवटीं नाथानें द्रव्य, धान्यें, तेल, साखर वगैरे सर्व सामुग्री सिद्धीच्या योगानें चिकार भरुन ठेविली व पुजार्‍यास बोलावून ती सर्व सामग्री दाखविली.
