दत्तात्रेयास सोडून जातेवेळेस त्यांस फार वाईट वाटलें. त्यांच्या डोळ्यांतुन एकसारखें प्रेमाश्रु वाहात होते. ते त्या ठिकाणाहून काशीस जाण्याच्या उद्देशानें निघाले व फिरत फिरत प्रयागास गेले. त्या समयीं तेथें त्रिविक्रम नांवाचा राजा राज्य करीत होता. तो काळासारखा शत्रूवर तुटून पडे. तो मोठा ज्ञानी असून उदास होता. त्यास सर्व सुखें अनुकूल होती, परंतु पुत्रसंतति नसल्यामुळें त्यास तीं सर्व सुखें गोड लागेनात. त्याची साधुसंतांच्या ठिकाणी अति निष्ठा असे. त्याच्या राज्यांत याचक फारसा दृष्टीस पडत नसे. त्याच्यी प्रजा कोणत्याहि प्रकारची काळजी न वाहतां आनंदामध्यें राहात होती. त्याची राणी महापतिव्रता असून त्याच्या मर्जींनुरूप वागत असे. परंतु पोटीं संतति नसल्यानें ती थोडी खिन्न असे. राजा दिवसेदिवस थकत चालल्यामुळें पुत्रप्राप्तीची निराशा वाटून तिला वारंवार दुःख होई. अशी ती काळजींत पडली असतां, एके दिवशीं राजा परलोकवासी झाला. तेव्हां राज्यांत मोठा हाहाःकार झाला. राणी रेवती तर दुःखसागरांत बुडून गेली. तिजवर दुःखाचे डोंगर कोसळले. त्रिविक्रमराजासारखा राजा पुन्हां होणार नाहीं, असें त्याचे अनेक गुण गाऊन लोक विलाप करूं लागले. सार्‍या प्रयागभर रडारड झाली.

त्यास संधीस मंच्छिद्रनाथ व गोरक्षनाथ त्या शहरांत प्रविष्ट झाले. त्या वेळीं मच्छिंद्र्नाथास तेथील परिस्थिति ऐकून कळकळा आला. धन्य हा राजा कीं, ज्यासाठीं सर्व लोक हळहळत आहेत. अशा राजास पुन्हां जिंवत करुन दुःखातून सर्वांस सोडवावें, असें मच्छिंद्रनाथाच्या मनांत आलें. त्यानें राजाची आयुष्यमर्यादा शोधून पाहिली तों तो ब्रह्मस्वरूपीं जाऊन मिळाला असें दिसलें. तेव्हां त्याचा उपाय हरला. कारण बीजावांचून वृक्ष कसा होईल ? मग मच्छिंद्रनाथ गांवांतुन परत जाऊं लागला. परंतु गोरक्षनाथाचें मन इतके कळवळलें होतें कीं, लोकांस त्या दुःखांत ठेवून त्यास परत जाववेना. तरी तो तसाच मच्छिंद्रनाथाबरोबर गेला.

गांवाबाहेर एक शिवालय होतें त्यांत ते दोघे जाऊन बसले. तेथून जवळच राजाच्या प्रेतास संस्कार करण्यासाठीं नेऊन ठेवलें होतें. प्रेतासमागमें पुष्कळ मंडळीं होती. त्याचें तें दुःख गोरक्षनाथाच्यानें पाहवेना. व राजाचें प्रेत उठविण्यासाठीं त्यानें मच्छिंद्रनाथास सांगुन पाहिलें. पण मच्छिंद्रनाथानें त्यास खुणेनें उगाच बसावयास सांगितलें. परंतु गोरक्षनाथास निमूटपणें बसवेना. तो म्हणाला, जर तुम्ही ह्यास उठवीत नसाल, तर मी ह्यास उठवून सर्वांच्या दुःखाचा परिहार करतों तें ऐकून राजास उठविण्याचें तुझें सामर्थ्य नाहीं, असें मच्छिंद्रनाथ म्हणाले. तेव्हां गोरक्षनाथा म्हणाला, राजास उठवून सर्वास सुखी करण्याचा मी निश्चय केला आहे. जर ही गोष्ट मजपासुन घडली नाहीं, तर अग्निकाष्ठें भक्षण करून स्वतःचा घात करून घेईन आणि जर याप्रमाणें मी न करीन तर कोटि वर्षेपर्यंत रवरव नरक भोगीन. हें ऐकून मच्छिंद्रनाथानें त्यास सांगितलें कीं. तूं अविचारानें पण केलास; पण राजा ब्रह्मास्वरूपीं जाऊन मिळाला आहे. मग गोरक्षनाथानें अंतदृष्टीनें पाहिलें असतां ती गोष्ट खरी दिसली. तेव्हां त्याची फार निराशा झाली.

नंतर गोरक्षनाथानें प्रतिज्ञा शेवटास नेण्यासाठीं काष्ठें गोळा केली. हा अग्नींत उडी टाकून प्राण दिल्याशिवाय राहणार नाही, अशी मच्छिंद्रनाथाची पूर्ण खात्री होती. करण पूर्वी एकदां त्यानें एका ब्रह्माणाचे स्त्रीस वड्याकरितां डोळा काढून दिला होता. हा अनुभव मच्छिंद्रनाथास आलेला असल्यानें त्यानें गोरक्षनाथास जवळ बोलावुन म्हटले कीं, लोकांच्या कल्याणाकरितां तूं आपल्या जिवावर उदार झाला आहेस; म्हणून आतां मी तुला एक युक्ति सांगतों, तसा वाग. म्हणजे तुझ्या मनाप्रमाणें गोष्ट घडून येऊन राजा जिवंत होईल व लोकांचें दुःख निवारण होईल. मी स्वतः राजाच्या देहांत प्रवेश करितो; परंतु तूं माझें हें शरीर बारा वर्षेपर्यंत जतन करुन ठेव. बारा वर्षानंतर मी पुनः माझ्या देहांत प्रवेश करीन. मग आपल्याकडून होईल तितकें आपण जगाचें कल्याण करूं या. त्याच्या युक्तीस गोरक्षनाथ अनुकूल झाला.

मग मच्छिंद्रनाथानें आपलें शरीर सोडून राजाच्या मृत शरीरांत संचार केला. त्यामुळें राजा लागलाच स्मशानांत उठून बसला. तेव्हां सर्व लोकांस आनंद झाला. मग लोकांनीं राजाचा एक सुवर्णाचा पुतळा करून जाळला. स्मशानांतील क्रिया उरकून घेतली व सर्वजण आनंदानें घरोघर गेले.

इकडे शिवालयमध्यें गोरक्षनाथ, मच्छिंद्रनाथाचें शरीर कोणत्या रीतीनें रक्षण करावें या विचारांत पडला होता. इतक्यांत एक गुरवीण तेथें आली. तिला पाहून, माझ्या मच्छिंद्रगुरुनें त्रिविक्रम राजाच्या देहांत प्रवेश केला आहे, इत्यादि सर्व वृत्तांत त्यानें तिला निवेदन केला आणि शेवटीं तो तिला म्हणाला कीं, बारा वर्षेपर्यंत माझ्या गुरुचें प्रेत मला सांभाळुन ठेविलें पाहिजे, तरी एखादें निवांत स्थळ मला दाखीव. ही गोष्ट गुप्त ठेवावयास पाहिजे, म्हणुन तू कोणापाशीं बोलूं नकोस. जरी ही गोष्ट उघडकीस येईल तर मोठाच अनर्थ घडून येईल. मग ती गुरवीण गोरक्षणाच्या म्हणण्याप्रमाणें वागण्यास कबूल झाली.

त्या शिवालयांत एक भुयार होतें. तेथें तें प्रेत छपवून ठेवण्यास गुरविणीनें सांगुन ती जागा त्यास दाखविल्यावर गोरक्षनाथानें तें प्रेत तेथें नेऊन ठेविलें. तें स्थळ त्याच्याशिवाय दुसर्‍या कोणास ठाऊक नव्हतें. त्या वेळीं गुरविणीनें गोरक्षनाथास विचारलें कीं बारा वर्षेंपवेतों हा देह जतन करून ठेवावयाचा असें तुम्हीं म्हणतां, परंतु इतके दिवस हें शरीर कसें टिकेल हें मला कळत नाहीं. हें ऐकून गोरक्षनाथानें तिला सांगितलें कीं, माझा गुरु मच्छिंद्रनाथ चिरंजीव आहे; त्याच्या शरीराचा नाश कदापि व्हावयाचा नाहीं. परंतु ही गोष्ट तुला आणि मलाच ठाऊक आहे. दुसर्‍या कोणाच्याहि कानीं जाऊं नये म्हणुन फार खबरदारी ठेव.

इकडे जिवंत झालेला त्रिविक्रमराजा ( मच्छिंद्रनाथ ) राजावाड्यांत गेल्यानंतर मनांत कांहीं किंतु न आणतां सर्व कारभार पाहूं लागला. राणीबरोबर त्याची त्रिविक्रमाप्रमाणेंच भाषणें होऊं लागली. तो पूर्ण ज्ञानी असल्यानें राजाच्या शरीरांत प्रवेश केल्यानंतर माहितगाराप्रमाणें सर्व व्यवस्था चालवूं लागला व राज्यप्रकरणीं सर्व कारभार सुरळीत चालूं झाला.

पुढें एके दिवशीं, त्रिविक्रमराजाच्या स्वरूपांत मच्छिंद्र्नाथ त्या देवालयांत गेला व गोरक्षनाथास तेथें पाहून विचारपूस करूं लागला. गोरक्षनाथानें त्यास उत्तरें देऊन आपण कोण, कोठले ह्याचा खुलासा केला. तसेंच, मच्छिंद्रनाथाचें शरीर सांभाळून ठेविलें होतें ती जागाहि नेऊन दाखविली व बर्बर भाषेंत सर्व हकीकत सांगितली. मग राजा क्षणभर तेथें बसून आपल्या राजवाड्यांत गेला. याप्रमाणें राजा नित्य शिवालयांत जात असे व आपलें शरीर ठेवलेली जागा पाहात असे. तो कांहीं वेळ शिवाजवळ व कांहीं वेळ गोरक्षाजवळ बसून प्रेमपूर्वक गोष्टी करीत असे. ह्याप्रमाणें तीन महिने एकसारखा क्रम चालला असतां एके दिवशीं, गोरक्षनाथानें राजास सांगितलें कीं, आतं आम्ही तीर्थयात्रेस जातों. आपण योगासाधन करून स्वस्थ असावें व स्वहित साधून स्वशरीराचें संरक्षण करावें. तें गोरक्षनाथाचें सर्व म्हणणें मच्छिंद्रनाथानें मान्य करून त्यास तीर्थयात्रा करावयास जाण्याची आज्ञा दिली व गोरक्षनाथ तीर्थयात्रेस गेला.

पुढें सहा महिन्यांनीं रेवती राणी गरोदर राहिली. नऊ महिने पूर्ण होतांच ती प्रसुत होऊन पुत्ररत्‍न झालें. बारावे दिवशीं मुलास पाळण्यांत घालून 'धर्मनाथ' असें नांव ठेविलें. त्या मुलाचें वय पांच वर्षाचें झाल्यावर एके दिवशीं राजा व राणी शिवालयांत पूजा करावयास गेलीं. तेथें राणीनें शिवाजी पूजा केल्यावर प्रार्थना केली कीं, हें शंकरा ! हे उमापते ! राजा त्रिविक्रम याच्याआधीं मला मरण दे. मी सुवाशीन असतां मरणें, हें उत्तम होईल.

रेवती राणीनें केलेली प्रार्थना ऐकतांच तेथील गुरविणीस खदखदां हसूं आलें. तें पाहून राणीनें तिला विचारलें कीं, कांहींतरी आश्चर्य वाटल्याशिवाय तुला हसूं येत नाहीं, तरी तुला कोणतें नवल वाटलें तें तूं मनांत संशय न धरतां मला सांग. तेव्हां गुरवीण म्हणाली कीं, तुम्ही ती हकीकत विचारूं नये व मलाहि खरी हकीकत तुम्हांपाशीं बोलतां येणार नाहीं; कां कीं, कदाचित् अनर्थहि घडून यावयाचा, म्हणुन मला भय वाटतें. आम्ही दुर्बळ असून तुम्ही सत्ताधीश आहांत आणि मी सांगेन ती हकीकत ऐकून तुम्हांस क्रोध आल्यास आमच्या जिवावर येऊन बेतायचें ! तें ऐकून, माझ्यापासून तुला कोणत्याहि प्रकारचें दुःख व जिवास कांहीं एक भीति होणार नाहीं, असें राणीनें तिला वचन दिलें. मग गुरविणीनें तिला मुळापासुन शेवटपर्यंत संपूर्ण वृत्तांत निवेदन केला. शेवटीं ती म्हणाली, त्रिविक्रमराजा मरण पावला असून त्याच्या देहांत मच्छिंद्रनाथानें संचार केला आहे; ह्या कारणानें तूं विधवा असतां सुवाशीव म्हणवितेस म्हणुन मला हसूं आलें; परंतु तुं आतां इतकेंच कर कीं, ही गोष्ट कोणाजवळ बोलूं नको.

नंतर, राणीच्या आग्रहावरून गुरविणीनें तिला मच्छिंद्रनाथाचें शरीर भुयारांत होतें तें नेऊन दाखविलें. तें पाहून रेवती उदास होऊन राजवाड्यांत गेली; तिला चैन पडेना. नाना प्रकारच्या कल्पना तिच्या मनांत येऊं लागल्या. ती म्हणाली, दुदैवानें पतिव्रतापणास मी अंतरलें हें खचित.योगायोग होता त्याप्रमाणें घडून आलें, पण पुढें येणार्‍या परिस्थितीचा आतांपासून बंदोबस्त केला पाहिजे. स्वस्थ बसून राहतां कामा नये. वास्तविक पाहूं गेले असतां, मच्छिंद्रनाथाचाचा हा हल्लींचा संसार आहे. परंतु बारा वर्षांनी पुन्हां येणारें संकट टाळलें पाहिजे. मच्छिंद्रनाथ परकायाप्रवेश पूर्णपणें जाणत असल्यामुळें तो भुयारांत ठेविलेल्या आपल्या शरीरांत प्रवेश करील. पण आपला मुलगा त्या वेळीं लहान राहून मीहि निराश्रित होऊन उघड्यावर पडेन. तरी मच्छिंद्रनाथाचा देह छिन्नभिन्न करून टाकला, हाच एक उत्कृष्ट उपाय दिसतो. देह नसल्यावर मच्छिंद्रनाथ कोठें जाणार ? अशी कल्पना मनांत आणुन त्याच्या देहाचा नाश करून टाकण्याचा तिनें पक्का निश्चय केला. नंतर कोणास न सांगतां एकां दासीस बरोबर घेऊन ती मध्यरात्रीस भुयारांत दरवाजा उघडून शस्त्रानें मच्छिंद्रनाथाच्या देहाचे तुकडे करून बाहेर नेऊन टाकून दिले आणि पूर्वीप्रमाणें गुहेचें द्वार लावून ती राजवाड्यांत गेली.

इतकें कृत्य झाल्यावर पार्वती जागृत झाली. तिनें शंकरास जागें केलें व रेवती राणीनें मच्छिंद्राच्या देहाचे तुकडे करून टाकल्याचें त्यास सांगितलें. तेव्हां आज आपला प्राण गेला असे शंकरास वाटलें. मग त्यानें याक्षिणींस बोलावून मच्छिंद्रनाथाच्या देहाचे तुकडे एकत्र करून कैलासास पाठवून देण्याबद्दल पार्वतीस सांगितलें. तिनें बोलावितांच कोटि चामुंडा येऊन दाखल झाल्या. त्यांस शरीराचे तुकडे वेंचून नीट जतन करून ठेवण्याची व वीरभद्राच्या स्वाधीन करण्याची पार्वतीनें आज्ञा केली. त्या आज्ञेप्रमाणें शरीराचे तुकडे वेंचून चामुंडा कैलासास गेल्या व ते तुकडे वीरभद्राच्या स्वाधीन करून त्यास सर्व वृत्तांत समजाविला. शेवटीं त्या वीरभद्रास म्हणाल्या कीं, आमचा व तुमचा शत्रु मच्छिंद्रनाथ हा मरण पावला आहे. त्यानें आम्हांस नग्न करुन आमची फारच फजिती केली होती. तसेंच अष्टभैरवांची दुर्दशा केली, तुमचीहि तीच दशा केली, मारुतीचाहि तोच परिणाम; सर्व देवांना भारी असा प्रबळ शत्रु अनायासें तावडीनें सांपडला आहे. तरी ह्याचें शरीर नीट जतन करून ठेवावें. ह्या मच्छिंद्रनाथाचा शिष्य गोरक्षनाथ महान् प्रतापी आहे, तो हें शरीर घेऊन जाण्याकरितां येईल; यास्तव फर सावध राहावें. तें ऐकून वीरभद्रानें चौर्‍यांयशीं कोटि बहात्तर लक्ष शिवगण रक्षणासाठी बसविले व कोटि यक्षिणी, चामुंडा, डंखिणी व शंखिणी यांचा खडा पहारा ठेविला.

इकडे त्रिविक्रमराजा ( मच्छिंद्रनाथ ) नित्य शिवालयांत गेल्यावर भुयाराकडे जाऊन पाही, पण खूण जशीच्या तशीच असल्यामुळें हा घडलेला प्रकार त्याच्या समजण्यांत आला नाही. त्याची बारा वर्षांची मुदत भरली. गोरक्षनाथ तीर्थयात्रेस गेला होता तोहि मुदत पुरी झाली म्हणून सावध झाला.
