पुढे मच्छिंद्रनाथ अंजन पर्वतावर गेला. तेथे त्याने महाकाळीचे दर्शन घेतले. शुक्लवेल घेऊन कुंडे पाहावयास लागला. इतक्यात देवीने सांगितल्याप्रमाणे शंभर कुंडे त्याच्या पाहण्यात आली. त्यात त्याने शुक्लवेल टाकिला. पुन्हा परत येऊन पाहू लागला, तो आदित्य नामक कुंडात टाकलेल्या वेलास पाने आलेली दिसली. मग त्याने त्यात स्नान केले व उदक प्राशन करिताच त्यास मूर्च्छना आली. म्हणून त्याने देवीच्या सांगण्याप्रमाणे द्वादश आदित्यांच्या नामस्मरणाचा जप चालविला. इतक्यात सूर्याने त्याजजवळ जाऊन कृपादृष्टीने पाहून त्यास सावध केले आणि मस्तकावर हात ठेवून तुझे सकल मनोरथ पूर्ण होतील, म्हणून वर दिला.

सूर्याने वरदान दिल्यानंतर मच्छिंद्रनाथ काचेची कुपी पाण्याने भरुन घेऊन मार्तंड पर्वतावर गेला व त्या मोठ्या अश्वत्थ वृक्षाच्या पाया पडला. सूर्याचे स्मरण करून ते उदक घालताच तेथे सूर्य प्रसन्न झाला आणि काय हेतु आहे, म्हणून विचारले. तेव्हा त्याने सांगितले की, कविता करावी असे माझ्या मनात आहे; तर त्वा साह्यभूत होऊन मंत्रविद्या सफळ करावी. मग सूर्य त्याचे हेतु पूर्ण होण्यासाठी त्यास सर्वस्वी साह्यभूत झाला. याप्रमाणे मच्छिंद्रनाथाने सात महिने ये-जा करून सारी दैवते प्रसन्न करून घेतली आणि साबरी विद्येचा एक स्वतंत्र ग्रंथ रचून तयार केला. मच्छिंद्रनाथ तीर्थयात्रा करीत फिरत असता बंगाल्यात चंद्रगिरी गावास गेला. तेथे सुराज म्हणून एक ब्राह्मण होता. त्याच गावात सर्वोपदयाळ या नावाचा एक वसिष्ठगोत्री गौडब्राह्मण रहात असेल. तो मोठा कर्मठ होता. त्याच्या स्त्रीचे नाव सरस्वती. ती अति रूपवती असून सद्गुणी असे; पण पुत्रसंतती नसल्याकारणाने नेहमी दिलगीर असे. त्या घरी मच्छिंद्रनाथ भिक्षेकरिता गेला. त्याने अंगणात उभे राहून 'अलख' शब्द केला आणि भिक्षा मागितली. तेव्हा सरस्वती बाहेर आली. तिने त्यास आसनावर बसविले आणि भिक्षा घातली. नंतर आपली सर्व हकीगत सांगून संतति नसल्याने दिलगीर आहे, असे त्यास सुचविले आणि काही उपाय असला तर सांगावा; म्हणून विनंति करून ती त्याच्या पाया पडली. तेव्हा मच्छिंद्रनाथास तिची दया आली. मग त्याने सूर्यमंत्राने विभूति मंत्रून ते भस्म तिला दिले आणि सांगितले की, हे भस्म रात्रीस निजतेवेळी खाऊन नीज. हे नुसतेच भस्म आहे, असे तू मनात आणू नको, हा साक्षात हरिनारायण जो नित्य उदयास येतो तो होय ! तो तुझ्या उदरी येईल, त्या तुझ्या मुलास मी स्वतः येऊन उपदेश करीन; तेणे करून तो जगात कीर्तिमान निघेल. सर्व सिद्धि त्याच्या आज्ञेत राहतील. असे बोलून मच्छिंद्रनाथ जावयासाठी उठला असता, तुम्ही पुन्हा परत कधी याल म्हणून तिने त्यास विचारले. तेव्हा मी बारा वर्षांनी परत येऊन मुलास उपदेश करीन असे सांगून मच्छिंद्रनाथ निघून गेला.

सरस्वतीबाईस भस्म मिळाल्यामुळे अत्यंत हर्ष झाला होता. ती राख तिने आपल्या पदरास बांधून ठेविली. मग ती आनंदाने शेजारणीकडे बसावयास गेली. तेथे दुसर्‍याही पाच-सात बायका आल्या होत्या व संसारासंबंधी त्यांच्या गोष्टी चालल्या होत्या. त्यावेळी तिनेहि आपल्या घरी घडलेला सर्व वृत्तांत त्यास सांगितला आणि त्या कानफोड्या बाबाने सांगितल्याप्रमाणे मी भस्म शेणात खाल्ले असता, मला पुत्र होईल काय म्हणून विचारले. तेव्हा एकजणीने तिला सांगितले की, त्यात काय आहे? असल्या धुळीने का पोरे होतात? तू अशी कशी त्याच्या नादी लागलीस कोण जाणे? आम्हाला हे चिन्ह नीट दिसत नाही. अशा तर्‍हेने त्या बायांनी तिच्या मनात किंतु भरविल्यामुळे ती हिरमुसले तोंड करून आपल्या घरे गेली व गोठ्याजवळ केरकचरा, शेण वगैरे टाकण्याची जी खांच होती, त्या उकिरड्यात तिने ते भस्म टाकून दिले.
